There is a paucity of underrepresented minority males applying to and attending medical school. Several factors have been identified that may contribute to this lack of representation within the medical profession, including inadequate academic preparation, few male role models serving as physicians within their communities, and a lack of social support that is needed to be successful as a pre-medical student. To that end, the purpose of the Minority Men in Medicine organization is to serve as an academic and social support network for underrepresented minority male students who are interested in attending medical school. The organization hopes to increase the numbers of underrepresented minority male matriculants to medical school through sponsored activities that include formal study sessions and other academic supports, panel discussions on various topics related to minority men in medicine and community service activities.
