We are seeking 2 AMO Physicist – POSTDOCTORAL APPOINTEES
We are seeking outstanding postdocs to support research projects of developing advanced atomic-physics-based sensors and transportable neutron polarization components, such as vapor-cell-based quasi-DC electrometer, optically pumped magnetometer and magnetic gradiometer for application to magnetoencephalography, He-3 cell neutron polarizer and analyzer, etc. On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Work with a team of physicists and engineers to develop practical (deployable) sensing technologies for electric field or magnetic field detections by overcoming challenges in physics and engineering.
- Construct and conduct experiments.
- Perform signal processing and data analysis.
- Help build and test sensor systems and components.
- Attend conferences and meetings.
- Publish papers on new scientific and engineering results.
Qualifications We Require
- A PhD in atomic, molecular, optical, or neutron physics or electrical engineering.
- Experience in more than one of the following areas: atomic physics, Rydberg electrometry, optically pumped magnetometry, hyperpolarized noble gas, polarized neutrons, diode laser systems, laser optics, optical alignment, mechanical design, computer control of experiments, or electromagnetics.
Qualifications We Desire
- Track record of successful research and development in AMO-relevant fields.
- Experience with one or more of the followings: trapped ion, alkali hot-vapor, cold-atom atomic physics experiments, or magnetoencephalography data collection and processing.
- Experience with laser and optical systems.
- Experience with professional math tools, such as Matlab, Mathematica, etc.
- Experience with professional software, such as Solidworks, Zemax, Comsol, etc.
- Experience with data acquisition, signal processing, and data analysis.
- Outstanding academic record.
- Excellent communication skills, written and oral.
- Excellent collaboration skills for working in a team environment.
About Our Team
The Atomic Optical Sensors Department leverages a diverse capability set to provide science and technology products to improve Sandia’s national security missions. The department includes a broad set of expertise including atomic physics, micro-optics, and electrochemistry and electroforming. As part of the Microsystems Engineering Sciences and Applications (MESA) facility, we provide solutions including atomic physics based sensors; atom- and ion-trapping devices and systems; outstanding diffractive, sub-wavelength and micro-optical components and systems. In addition to work for internal Sandia organizations, we have an established record of successful engagement with external customers.
This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia’s discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.
Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
